  • US coal train loadings continue to climb from winter slowdown

    US coal train loadings grew 9.4% week on week on increased output from Appalachia and the 

    Powder River Basin. 


    Data filed by the four major US railroads -- CSX, Union Pacific, BNSF and Norfolk Southern -- fo

    r  the  week  ended  January  19  shows  US coal loadings averaged 94.7 trains/d, up from 86.5 

    trains/d the previous week. 


    Central Appalachian and Northern Appalachian loadings were up for the third straight week. 

    CAPP loadings climbed to 14.8 trains/d from 10.6 trains/d, and NAPP counts were up to 10.3 

    trains/d from 7.3 trains/d. 


    PRB loadings increased to 56.9 trains/d from 53.6 trains/d the prior week. 

    Illinois Basin loadings slipped to 5.8 trains/d from 7.6 trains/d. 

    In other production areas, Utica Basin loadings were down to 3 trains/d from 4.1 trains/d, while 

    loadings from the outside the primary basins were up to 3.9 trains/d from 3.4 trains/d.
