  • Australia's North Queensland Jul coal exports rise 9% on year to 12.24 mil mt: NQBP

Exports of coal from the metallurgical coal dominant region of North Queensland, Australia,

totaled  12.24  million mt in July, up 9% year on year but down 4% from June, North Queen

sland Bulk Ports Corporation data showed Tuesday.

The exports come via the 85 million mt/year capacity Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, the 55

million mt/year Hay Point Coal Terminal and the 50 million mt/year Abbot Point Coal Termin

    al.

Total exports in July from the three terminals translate to an annualized rate of 144.16 millio

n mt, which leaves 45.84 million mt of latent capacity across the three terminals with a comb

ined capacity of 190 million mt/year.

The  biggest  of the three, DBCT, which is a Queensland State Government-owned common

user facility, shipped 5.82 million mt during the month, which is up 8% year on year but down

10% from a six-month high of 6.44 million mt in June, the figures showed.

The neighboring BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance-owned Hay Point Coal Terminal saw a simila

r trend to DBCT, with its July exports of 4.06 million mt surging 15% year on year, but falling

4% from a seven-month high of 4.24 million mt in June, NQBP data showed.

The Adani Group-owned Abbot Point Coal Terminal, meanwhile, saw exports edge 2% highe

r year on year and jump 13% month on month to 2.37 million mt in July, it said.

For the year to July, combined exports from the three terminals totaled 71.76 million mt, with

an annualized rate of 123.55 million mt, NQBP data showed. Last year, they shipped 144.19

    million mt.

All three terminals saw export volumes crash around April following Tropical Cyclone Debbie,

which caused them all to shutdown for periods of time.

The  breakdown  of  metallurgical coal and thermal coal export volumes was not readily avail

able, but metallurgical coal makes up the bulk of those exports.
