US coal exports totaled 6.6 million mt in May, up 0.1% from April and up 72.1% from the year

-ago month, US Census data showed Thursday. 

For  the  year,  US  coal  exports  totaled 33.4 million mt, up 60.3% compared with the same 

period last year. 

May met coal exports totaled 4.14 million mt, down 1% from April and up 39.3% from the year

-ago month. Year-to-date met coal exports totaled 19.36 million mt, up 27.1% from the same 

period last year. 

Top  met  coal export destinations in May were Brazil, which imported 563,876 mt, compared 

with  410,510 mt in the year-ago month; Canada, which imported 410,345 mt, compared with 

279,181  mt  last year;  and Turkey,  which imported 308,159 mt, compared with 301,924 mt

last year. 

Bituminous  coal  exports  in May  totaled 1.82 million  mt, up 16.9% from April and up 200%

from last year. Year-to-date bituminous coal exports totaled 10.97 million mt, up 146.4% fro

m the year-ago period. 

Top bituminous  coal  export  destinations  in  May  were  India,  which  imported 403,956 mt, 

compared  with  93,140  mt in the year-ago month; the Netherlands, which imported 300,947 

mt,   compared  with  214,776  mt  last year;  and  South  Korea, which imported 190,654 mt, 

compared with a trivial amount last year. 

Subbituminous coal exports from the US  totaled 573,416 mt in May,  down  24.1%  from  the

prior month and up 328% from the year-ago month. For the year, subbituminous coal export

s totaled 2.84 million mt, up 270% from the year-ago period. 

The top importer of US subbituminous coal in May was South Korea, which shipped 301,746 

mt, compared with zero in the year-ago month; Mexico, which imported 194,490 mt,  up from 

134,000 mt in the year-ago month; and Spain, which imported 77,000 mt, compared with zer

o tons last year.
